Syracuse’s First Varsity Eight Places 3rd Overall
SHELTON, Conn. – Rowing season is underway and it began Saturday at the Head of the Housatonic where the Syracuse women's rowing team raced four eights in their first event of the fall.
In the First Varsity Eight, the Orange placed 3rd overall and finished two places higher than last year (5th). Yale took first finishing in 14:29.9. The Bulldog's 2V was second, crossing the line in 14:38.6 and Syracuse rounded out the top-3 in 14:51.5.
"It was a good first race of the year and it was great to put practice into play on the Housatonic today," said senior captain Lucy Pearce.
"We are looking forward to the Head of the Charles next weekend and feeling excited to keep finding speed as we move towards our season goal," added Ellen Pozzi.
Syracuse's Second Varsity Eight (15:20.7) and Third Varsity Eight (15:26.7) placed 8th and 11th, respectively. The Orange had three of the top-12 boats. The Second Varsity Eight finished ahead of Columbia's 2V. In the Third Varsity Eight, 'Cuse beat multiple crews from UMass, Boston College and Northeastern as well as teams from Columbia, Boston University,
"The 3V had a great season opener," said the crew's coxswain Skyler Rivera. "We brought the heat and pressured our opponents. The Orange made a statement that they can hang with other successful programs. It was a great race but we have a lot more in the tank. One race down, two more to go!"
The 4V played 22nd overall finishing just shy of the 16-minute mark and ahead of Boston University, UMass and Boston College's third varsity eight crews. The Orange also beat Columbia's 4V, UMass' 4V, and Fordham's 2V.
There was 30 total crews racing in the Division 1 group at the Housatonic Saturday.
"I would say it was a solid trip for our team," said freshman Madison D'Ambra. "It was a great opportunity to truly learn my teammates who will be my family for the next four years. I thought the racing went well...It presented us a chance to see where we stand against our competition."
"What may have been a weakness in today's race can be a strength in races to come," she added.
Improving on last year's Head of the Hous, Syracuse closed margins on other top crews by over 30 seconds.
'Cuse continues its fall season at the world-famous Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass., on Sunday, Oct. 20th.
