HAMILTON, N.Y. - Syracuse opened its home-and-home with Colgate Friday night with a 5-2 loss at Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, N.Y. Three of the Raiders' goals came in the first period, with the game's final four goals coming in the third period. Sophomore Marielle McHale snapped the shutout for Syracuse, and senior Anonda Hoppner lit the lamp in the final 20 seconds of the game. The series concludes Saturday at 3 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion in Syracuse, N.Y.
How it happened
Colgate jumped on the board six minutes and 50 seconds into the game thanks to Sammy Smigliani who went left post while coasting dot-to-dot in front of senior goaltender Ady Cohen, the goal her first of the year. Noemi Neubauerova then sounded the horn with 4:53 left in the opening frame off a low snipe from between the circles to make it 2-0 Colgate. The Raiders closed the opening period with a goal from Delani MacKay who went low to high after settling a rebounded shot in front of Cohen.
Â
The action cooled in the second period as no goals were scored, but the Orange dd outshoot the opposition 11-0. Colgate added its fourth goal nine minutes into the third period thanks to Maggie MacEachern, but McHale followed that up three minutes later with her goal, the sophomore catching a rebound off the right pipe and backhanding it into the open net.
Â
Colgate's Caroline Ross then scored the final goal for the Raiders at the 16:55 mark of the third. Hoppner closed out the game with a shoveled-in blocker-side goal from down in front.
