SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Three goals weren't enough to lift Syracuse (0-3) past No. 7 Boston College (4-0) on Saturday afternoon as the Orange lost, 4-3, to the Eagles at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Syracuse sounded the horn once in the second and twice in the third off shots from senior Anonda Hoppner and juniors Emma Polaski and Jessica DiGirolamo. 'Cuse returns to the ice next Friday and Saturday to host Northeastern and celebrate alumni weekend.
Â
"They were a really good skating team and highly skilled so there was a concerted effort to get in their way and throw them off today," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "I think we were pretty successful with that at different parts of the game, but when we tried to just stick check and make it a speed game, they had the advantage. I told the team after the first period that we came out and maybe gave them a little too much respect and that we needed to play our game. Today was a lesson to learn. We need to be better mentally prepared."
Of note
-Â Â Â Emma Polaski's goal was her second of the season. She now leads the team in goals after netting her first of the year in Syracuse's home opener against Clarkson (Sept. 27).
-Â Â Jessica DiGirolamo registered a goal, two assists, and nine shots this afternoon. With today's effort, DiGirolamo is now the team's point leader (1-2-3).
-  Sophomore Lauren Bellefontaine paced the Orange in faceoff victories tonight, winning 12 of the 22 she was a part of.
Â
How it happened
The Eagles opened scoring just four minutes into the first period when Kelly Browne fed Cayla Barnes from between the circles. Barnes then threw the bouncing puck under senior goalkeeper Ady Cohen's left elbow to light the lamp. BC then added an insurance goal six minutes into the second period when Lindsay Agnew went bar-down from the left circle faceoff dot.
Â
The Orange responded with a power-play goal by Polanski 10 minutes later when DiGirolamo slipped a quick pass to Polaski who was inches from the goalie crease, her shot sneaking under the crossbar to cut the Eagles' lead to 2-1 going into the final period.
Â
Boston College struck again for two quick goals to open the third, but the Orange continued to create scoring chances. With Syracuse in a 4-1 deficit, DiGirolamo took a run up the ice, did a give-and-take with junior captain Kristen Siermachesky, and curled a goal over BC goalkeeper Maddy McArthur's head. Hoppner would sound the horn one last time in the dying minutes of the game off a power-play opportunity, but it was too little too late as the final whistle blew one minute and 39 seconds later. The Orange ended the day with 36 shots and and two power-play goals.
