SYRACUSE, N.Y. - In a hard-fought first encounter of the year between Syracuse and St. Lawrence, the Orange fell just short in overtime, losing 4-3 at War Memorial Arena Saturday afternoon. Senior Savannah Rennie scored her fourth of the year, while senior Anonda Hoppner netted her third, and senior Victoria Klimek scored her second. Freshman Anna Leschyshyn picked up two points as she contributed assists on two of the Orange's goals. 'Cuse returns to the ice Saturday to start a two-game road series with Penn State in State College, Pa.
Â
"We had the energy tonight, we just didn't execute," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We need to find a way to win these games. We have to look at the positives and see the things that we're doing well and we need to do them better."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hoppner gave Syracuse the early lead halfway into the opening period, scoring her third of the season on an assist from Klimek and Leschyshyn. St. Lawrence was quick to answer though, scoring less than 70 seconds later thanks to Amanda Butterfield. With under five minutes left in the first, the Saint's netted another to go up 2-1. SLU carried that lead into the dressing room following the end of the opening frame.
Â
The second period was much quieter as time ticked pass without hardly any interruptions in play. Syracuse scored the lone goal of the middle period, Kilmek putting away her second goal off the season on a pass from Leschyshyn seven minutes into play. The Saint's had no answer to the Orange, making the match tied at two heading into the third.
Â
Three minutes into the third, St. Lawrence found their response, putting the Orange down 2-3 off a goal from Rachel Teslak. Syracuse dug deep and buried another equalizer a little more than halfway through the period, this one coming from Rennie to tie things at 3-3. Neither team could put another past the opposing goalie in regulation, so the game was sent to overtime. The excitement was short lived though as St. Lawrence won the opening faceoff and capped the day on a goal from Anna Segedi just 20 second into OT.
