11/23/2019 5:16:00 PM | Ice Hockey
STATE COLLEGE, PA. – Syracuse ice hockey (2-11-1, 1-1-1 CHA) played to a 1-1 tie against Penn State (3-6-4, 0-2-1 CHA) on the road Saturday afternoon. Reigning CHA Player of the Week Victoria Klimek provided the lone goal for the Orange five minutes into the opening period off assists from sophomore Shelby Calof and freshman Anna Leschyshyn.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After being bogged down in the defensive zone for about a minute, Calof collected a touch pass by the right-side faceoff dot and snapped an outlet pass to a streaking Klimek in the neutral zone. Klimek came in on a breakaway, burying her third goal of the 2019 campaign through the legs of Nittany Lions' netminder Chantal Burke 4:56 into the contest. The goal earned Calof her third assist of the year.
Â
A hooking call on senior forward Savannah Rennie gave Penn State the first power play of the game, and the Nittany Lions capitalized. Twenty-nine seconds into the man-advantage, Penn State defender Rene Gangarosa let go of a wrist shot from the left point that was deflected in by Brooke Madsen. The tally came with 4:09 remaining in the first period and would be the final one of the game.
Â
Through the next two periods and into overtime, the Nittany Lions outshot the Orange 16-14. Junior goalie Allison Small finished the tilt with 24 saves, compared to 26 for Burke and Penn State. 'Cuse was unable to convert on the man-advantage, finishing 0-for-3, while the Nittany Lions cashed in on 1-of-5 powerplay chances.
