ERIE, Pa. - Junior goaltender Ady Cohen notched her first career shutout, and the Syracuse women's hockey team overpowered Mercyhurst from start to finish in the Orange's 4-0 victory Saturday afternoon.
The win completes the series sweep over the Lakers, improving Syracuse's record to 8-18-2 and 8-5-1 in College Hockey America action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After scoring six goals in yesterday victory, the Orange had plenty left in the tank.
Sophomore forward Victoria Klimek got the party started in the opening period, scoring a power-play goal with a little under four minutes remaining. Her second goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winning goal, was assisted by junior forwards Kelli Rowswell and Savannah Rennie.
Syracuse stayed hot in the second period. Ahead 1-0, senior defenseman Allie Munroe tacked on a shorthanded goal before redshirt senior forward Brooke Avery, who scored last night's winner, scored on a power-play opportunity.
Munroe's goal came from assists by freshman forwards Lauren Bellefontaine and Abby Moloughney. Avery, meanwhile, was helped by freshman defenseman Shelby Calof and Munroe.
Klimek's second goal of the game came midway through the fourth quarter, as she delivered blow to Mercyhurst. Munroe and Moloughney picked up assists on her goal.
Throughout the entirety of Syracuse's onslaught, Cohen was unbeatable in net. She made 21 saves in her shutout effort.
OF NOTE
Munroe logged a three-point game for the second contest in a row. She leads the Orange in assists (19) and points (23) this season.
Avery's second-period goal capped off a four-point weekend. She scored twice and recorded an assist yesterday and now has 17 points this season, which is second most on the team.
The freshmen forwards of Bellefontaine and Moloughney were one again spectacular. Bellefontaine, the reigning CHA Rookie of the Month, picked up another point, while Moloughney's two-assist game gave her three points for the weekend.
