ATLANTA - Syracuse point guard Tiana Mangakahia was named a Region 1 finalist for 2019 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America honors, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced today.
Mangakahia is one of 13 finalists in the first region, which also includes Louisville's Asia Durr and Notre Dame's Arike Ogunbowale. The selection committee will select the 10-member All-America team from 52 candidates across five total regions. The team will be announced Thursday, April 4, during the WBCA Convention at Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay, Fla.
Mangakahia leads the Orange with 16.7 points and 8.4 assists per game this season. She is a ACC-All Conference First Team and All-Tournament First Team Selection as well as a four-time ACC Player of the Week. She leads the nation in total assists (268) and is second in assists per game. Mangakahia also leads the ACC in free throw percentage (.876) and is third in free throws made (12), fourth in assist/turnover ratio (2.14), total points (534), steals (69), steals per game (2.16) and ninth in free throw attempts (137).
Â
She is eighth in the league in points per game and has a hand in 48.5 percent of Syracuse's offense each game between points and assists. She recorded the first points, rebounds and assists triple double in program history on Jan. 13 with 34 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a 90-77 win over North Carolina. The Brisbane, Australia, native tied a career-high 44 points shooting 16-for-20 from the field in a win at No. 22 Florida State on Feb. 28, the first victory in Tallahassee in program history.
Â
In addition to being named a WBCA Region 1 finalist, Mangakahia was named a Lieberman Award finalist this month. The honor is given to the student-athlete that exhibits the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of Class of 1996 Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman.
Mangakahia and the Syracuse women's basketball team are entering the NCAA Tournament as a top-16 overall seed for just the second time in program history. The third-seeded Orange are 24-8 and earned the right to host the first and second rounds in the Carrier Dome, starting with No. 14 seed Fordham at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23.
Tickets are available online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).
