Cherry Hill, N.J. – The 13th-ranked Syracuse Orange women's rowing team kicked off its spring campaign with a strong showing at the Doc Hosea Invitational on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. Syracuse finished second in team points with 102, 23 points behind team leader Rutgers. Additionally, the Orange return home to Central New York with both the Kittell Cup and the Orange Challenge Cup once again.
"It's exciting to finally have the spring season underway, with all our boats having an opportunity to line them up and remember why we train so hard," first year head coach Luke McGee said. "This year's event brought great racing, two photo finishes and our first win over the year [3V8+]. It was a good team performance but one that left us hungry to make improvements. So we'll get back to work on Monday with the goal of finding more speed before heading down to race in Virginia next weekend."
Syracuse's varsity eight placed second in the morning's first heat earning a spot in the varsity finals. The second varsity eight followed suit with a second place finish clocking a time of 6:54.77 in heat one.
In the first heat of the varsity four Syracuse finished second behind Rutgers while the Orange varsity four B was fourth in its heat.
'Cuse took first in the third varsity eight for heat one to finish off the morning races.
In the varsity eight grand final, the Orange placed second behind Rutgers with a time of 6:32.31. The second varsity eight also placed second in the grand final while the varsity four placed third behind Minnesota and Rutgers.
The Orange won the second varsity four petite finals edging Temple, UMass, Rhode Island and Boston University and 'Cuse won the third varsity eight grand final in the last race of the day.
Syracuse earned team points in the varsity eight, 2V8+, varsity four and the V4B+ competing in four grand finals.
The Kittell Cup goes to the winner of the Syracuse-Boston University race and changed hands each time it was contested up until 2011. Since then, the Orange have retained the cup. The did not race in 2017. Donated by former SU rower Kristin Bidwell '90, the Kittell Cup is named after former associate director of athletics Janet Kittell for her support of the women's rowing program.
The Orange Challenge Cup is a race featuring Syracuse, Northeastern and Penn, and is one of the oldest trophies in women's rowing, dating back to 1977.
"The Doc Hosea Invite was built out of the Orange Challenge Cup between Syracuse, Northeastern and Pennsylvannia," McGee said. "It was created to provide multiple early season races for traditionally colder weather crews."
The Doc Hosea Invitational is rowed in honor of the late Dr. Tim Hosea, a longtime USRowing Team Physician, for his contributions to the sport.
