Syracuse, N.Y. – The 17th-ranked Syracuse women's rowing team got its first taste of Atlantic Coast Conference competition on Saturday at the ACC/Big Ten Dual in Charlottesville, Va. The Orange competed against Duke while also facing B1G opponents No. 6 Michigan and No. 7 Ohio State.
"This weekend was a great opportunity to race against some of the best teams in the ACC and country," first-year head coach Luke McGee said. "I was pleased to see our athletes take on the challenge. Like most early season racing, it showed us that we still have work to do. With two weeks until our next race, we now have a chance to refocus on training and find additional speed in all our boats."
In the morning session, Syracuse faced Duke and Ohio State. The varsity eight placed second edging the Blue Devils by five seconds. The second varsity eight finished third while the varsity four also placed third.
In the second session, Syracuse came out strong against No. 6 Michigan and Duke. The Orange placed second in both the varsity eight while the 2V8+ and the varsity four closed the racing with a third place finish.
The varsity eight finished six seconds faster in its second race of the day, improving from 6:36.5 to 6:30.8 in the afternoon. The 2V8+ also improved from the morning session crossing the finish in 6:47.4, almost three seconds faster.
Syracuse is off from competition next weekend and will next race at the Clemson Invitational on April 19-20 on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
