SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Alexa Romero tossed her second complete game shutout of the season, leading Syracuse to a 4-0 victory against Duke in the first matchup in program history Friday afternoon at Skytop Stadium. With the win over Duke (21-23, 8-8 ACC), Syracuse (18-20, 7-6 ACC) has now won nine of its last 11 games.

Romero (12-5) allowed one hit and four walks in seven innings pitched on her way to her third-consecutive double-digit strikeout game, retiring 11. Alicia Hansen led the 'Cuse offense with a 2-for-4 performance that included two RBIs.

"I think what we ask our pitchers to do is just give us a chance," said head coach Shannon Doepking. "Our offense will figure it out. It's holding us in games long enough to allow the offense to do what they need to do."

It was a quiet opening four innings for both teams, as Peyton St. George and Romero combined for 11 strikeouts and only one hit. The Orange broke things open in the fifth with a two-out walk to Bryce Holmgren. Hansen knocked in Syracuse's first hit of the game before Alexis Kaiser scored Holmgren from second with an RBI-single to left field.

Syracuse built on its lead in the sixth with four-consecutive hits, all coming with two outs. Jessica Skladal and Gabby Teran both sent singles to the outfield, setting up an at-bat for Bryce Holmgren. Holmgren's hit to left field scored the first run of the inning before Hansen delivered with a two-RBI double.

Duke threatened early, opening the game with back-to-back walks, but Romero pitched around the threat, retiring the next two batters. The Blue Devils would threaten two more times with a pair of base runners in the third and fifth innings but couldn't find an answer against Romero.

Romero moves into a three-way tie with 11 career shutouts at Syracuse.
All six of the Orange's hits against Duke came with two outs in the inning.
Kaiser has recorded five RBIs in the last four games.

Following an adjusted schedule due to weather, the Orange will close out the series with a doubleheader Saturday against the Blue Devils. The first game is set to begin at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
