
#31 Orange Defeated by Clemson in Regular-Season Finale

CLEMSON, S.C. – The 31st-ranked Syracuse women's tennis team finished the regular season with a hard-fought loss at Clemson Sunday afternoon.
The Orange suffered a 4-3 setback to conclude its regular-season campaign with a 12-11 overall record and a 5-9 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Since joining the ACC in 2013, Syracuse has won five or more conference duals in five out of six years. The ACC is arguably the nation's toughest tennis conference, as 10 teams, including the Orange, are currently ranked in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top-25 poll.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Clemson claimed the doubles point to open the match. The Tigers' eighth-ranked duo of Marie Leduc and Fernanda Navarro held of No. 56 senior Gabriela Knutson and junior Miranda Ramirez, 6-1.
Senior Maria Tritou and junior Guzal Yusupova then lost 6-4 on court three to give Clemson the early 1-0 lead.
The Tigers did not relent in singles play. Clemson won three consecutive matches to open a 4-0 lead, clinching the dual victory.
The Orange's first point came courtesy of senior Dina Hegab, who won in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) on court six. No. 19 Knutson and No. 100 Ramirez followed suit on courts one and three, respectively.
Knutson defeated No. 82 Leduc by the score of 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8), while Ramirez moved past Ally Miller-Krasilnikov in straight sets (7-5, 7-5) to give Syracuse its final two points.
OF NOTE
Ramirez completed the regular season with a team-high 16 wins. She played primarily at the No. 3 position, where she earned 10 of her 16 overall victories.
Knutson finished right behind Ramirez in singles with 15 wins. She played all of her matches at the No. 1 position and defeated a team-high eight nationally ranked opponents.
In doubles, the Orange's top pair of Knutson and Ramirez wrapped up the regular season with a 12-9 record. They played out of the No. 1 spot for the entirety of the spring, knocking off three ranked opponents.

The ACC Tournament begins Wednesday, April 17, in Cary, North Carolina. More information about the Orange's seeding and first-round opponent will come at the conclusion of conference play later tonight.Â
