SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Former Syracuse women's soccer standout Stephanie Skilton is headed to the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Skilton was named to the New Zealand women's national soccer team, head coach Tom Sermanni and the Football Ferns announced. She, along with 22 teammates, will compete in next month's World Cup in France.
A native of Auckland, New Zealand, the forward has worked her way up to the senior team over the years. She first represented her country at the 2010 U-17 Women's World Cup before moving up to the U-20 team. She played for Ferns at both the 2012 and 2014 U-20 Women's World Cup until she made her senior team debut in an international friendly against Switzerland in 2014.
Skilton totaled 58 points (27 goals, 4 assists) in her four-year career (2013-16) at Syracuse. She ranks fifth on the all-time points ledger, and her 27 career goals are second most in program history.
She and her New Zealand teammates are in Group E, which includes Cameroon, Canada and Netherlands. New Zealand's opening group-stage match is against Netherlands on June 11 in Le Havre, France.
The first- and second-place teams from each of the six groups, plus the four best third-place squads, qualify for the knockout stage, which begins June 22. The final is July 7 in Lyon, France.
