SYRACUSE - The Syracuse women's soccer team opened the season on Sunday evening with an exhibition match against Albany. The 'Cuse fought hard from the start, but ultimately lost, 3-2, to the Great Danes at the SU Soccer Stadium in the first of two preseason scrimmages.
"Albany is a really good side so they were a good early test for us," first-year head coach Nicky Adams said. "What I'm really proud of from this group is that we responded to almost every goal and came back. We were trying to create chances and this group is really trying to do what we're asking. It's game one and it's a long season so we'll be okay."
The game was played in a series of three 30-minute periods and opened with the Orange looking for scoring chances early on. Syracuse put four shots on net in the opening 30 minutes but the Great Danes dealt away the chances. Scoring didn't open until 13 minutes into the second period when Albany's Christina Cernuto hit a laser from the left side. The Orange responded three minutes later with a mirror-image goal from junior defender Shannon Aviza. Albany kept the tempo up and moments later took a one-goal lead thanks to a chip from Cernuto.
The game cooled for 11 minutes after Albany's goal but the Orange managed to tie things up once again in the dying moments of period number two thanks to redshirt sophomore Stephanie deLaforcade. deLaforcade caught freshman Teri Jackson's rebound in the 18-yard box and slotted it past the keeper with three seconds to spare to make the board read 2-2 going into the final period of play. Albany's victory was secured in the 69th minute when Leah Pais hit a rocket into the right upper 90. Syracuse was unable to respond despite putting up eight attempts in the third.
Freshman goalkeeper Michaela Walsh spent the majority of the game between the sticks for the Orange, recording multiple saves over the first two periods before being relieved by junior Lysianne Proulx.
The Orange return to the field on Aug. 17 with a road scrimmage against Rutgers at 7 p.m. in New Brunswick, N.J. The season officially opens on Aug. 25 when the Orange host Colgate at 7 p.m.
