POTSDAM, N.Y. — Syracuse ice hockey closed out opening weekend with a 5-1 loss to #3 Clarkson in Potsdam, N.Y. today. The Orange celebrated freshman Anna Leschyshyn scoring her first career goal, a power-play opportunity in the third period. Junior goalkeeper Allison Small got the starting nod for the third time in her Syracuse career and recorded 24 saves through 60 minutes. Freshman center Brynn Koocher led the team in faceoffs, slapping eight pucks Syracuse's way. 'Cuse returns to the ice on Saturday when Boston College comes to the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
"We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "When we play as a team and play determined, we're very good. When our feet stop moving and we puck watch we're vulnerable and it cost us today. Overall, I like our team's attitude and feel we have great potential this season."
Freshman Impact
Syracuse's four freshmen have made their presence known through the first two games of the season. Koocher (C), Leschyshyn (RW), and Madison Beishuizen (LW) skate on the same line and have totaled one goal and two assists through 13 shots. Koocher has 11 faceoff victories through opening weekend, while the defensive pairing of Batherson and junior Jessica DiGirolamo earned the start today and brought their blocked-shot total to seven.
Â
How it happened
Scoring chances were even throughout the game as the Orange took 24 shots and earned five power plays to the Golden Knight's four power plays and 29 shots.
Â
Clarkson took the lead late in the first period off a 15th-minute goal from Stephanie Markowski and never took the pressure off from there, scoring another goal just two minutes later from Kayla Friesen.
The Green and Gold then lit the buzzer twice in the second period courtesy of Michaela Pejzlova and Lauren Bernard, with both goals coming while Syracuse was a player-down on the ice.
Â
Leschyshyn's goal ended the shutout four minutes into the third stanza but it was for naught as Clarkson's Gabrielle David put a stamp on the game two minutes before the final horn.
