
Big Red Hands Orange First Loss of the Season

Ithaca, N.Y. – Syracuse University's field hockey team was handed its first loss of the season in a 2-1 decision at Cornell on Saturday afternoon. The Orange are 3-1 on the season and return home to J.S. Coyne Stadium to face their first ranked opponent of the season, #17 Saint Joseph's on Friday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m.
 
The Big Red scored in the fifth minute to take a quick 1-0 lead and added an insurance goal in the second quarter when Caroline Ramsey scored. Both Cornell goals came off penalty corners. Head Coach Ange Bradley made a change in goal putting Syd Taylor between the pipes.
 
The Orange came out hot in the second half taking four shots and having two corners while holding Cornell to one shot in the third quarter. 'Cuse put a point on the scoreboard when Charlotte de Vries scored unassisted in the 49th minute on a rebounded shot during a Syracuse corner.
 
Syracuse had a game-high six corner opportunities and fired off seven shots, four on goal, during the final frame but were unable to send the game to overtime for the third time this season.
 
The Orange outshot the Big Red 16-8 and had an 11-4 advantage in penalty corners. De Vries had a team-high seven shots while three other Orange had multiple shots.
