The Syracuse field hockey team begins its fall campaign on Friday, Oct. 2, when the Orange travel to Virginia for an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup on ACC Network. Game time is set for 3 p.m. The two teams will meet again in a non-conference game at noon on Sunday, Oct. 4.
Â
Inside the Matchup
Friday is the 11th meeting between the two teams since first playing each other in 1993. Virginia leads the all-time series, 7-3. All three of Syracuse's wins have been during the Orange's ACC era. The last time they met, Virginia earned a 2-0 win at J.S. Coyne Stadium on Sept. 20, 2019. This fall marks the second-straight year the Orange begin their conference season against the Cavaliers.
Â
Scouting the Opposition
Virginia opened its season last weekend by splitting a pair of games with Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons earned a 2-1 win in Saturday's non-conference encounter but Virginia bounced back to win 1-0 Sunday with a goal by Laura Janssen in the 57th minute. It marked the Cavs' first ACC win of the season.
Â
Fans in the Stands
Due to health and safety considerations in addition to the current guidelines established for sports venues by the Commonwealth of Virginia, attendance at UVA home competitions is limited to family of student-athletes and each team's coaching staff, until further notice. There is no public admission to these events and all tailgating in University parking lots is prohibited. The gate will open 30 minutes prior to the game.
Â
Where to Watch
Friday's ACC opener will be televised nationally on ACC Network with Eric Frede and Leah Secondo on the call. Sunday's non-conference game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra via the WatchESPN App. Fans are encouraged to check with their cable provider or streaming service to see if they have ACC Network.
Â
A Mix of Old and New
Syracuse welcomes six freshman, including five Europeans, to the 2020 squad, while returning 16 letter winners form last year's NCAA Tournament team. Charlotte de Vries and Laura Graziosi were named Preseason All-ACC. The duo, joined by senior Carolin Hoffmann, are three of Syracuse's four NFHCA All-Region honorees from 2019.
Â
Preseason Outlook
Syracuse is picked to finish sixth in the ACC and earned one first-place vote in the 2020 Coaches' Poll. The Orange finished fourth in the ACC a season ago with a 3-3 record and posted a 12-7 overall mark. The Orange made its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance in head coach Ange Bradley's 14 seasons at the helm.
Â
Syracuse Season Openers
Syracuse is 13-1 in season openers during Bradley's time on the sidelines, most recently winning the 2019 opener in a thrilling, overtime victory against Vermont, 4-3. Charlotte de Vries found the back of the goal in the 66th minute to secure the triumph. It was the first of six overtime wins for the Orange in 2019.
