
Syracuse Drops Road Decision at Louisville

Host Louisville (2-1, 2-1 ACC) scored three goals in the first 14 minutes of the second half and went on to defeat Syracuse (0-2, 0-2 ACC), 3-0, on Thursday afternoon.
CLOSELY CONTESTED FIRST 45
The two ACC rivals each had chances in the first half but went to the break tied, 0-0. Syracuse had a 7-6 edge in shot attempts.Â
CARDINALS STRIKE QUICKLY AFTER INTERMISSION
Following a scoreless first half, the Cardinals got on the board when Jessica DeFilippo followed up a Syracuse save by finding the back of the net. Louisville extended its lead shortly after on a drive by Emina Ekic that was set up by Delaney Snyder.
Ekic added her second tally of the afternoon following a lead pass from Snyder that put Ekic in the clear and enabled her to up the advantage to 3-0.
COACH NICKY ADAMS SAID
"I thought overall it was a tale of two halves. I'm really proud of the way our players played in the first half. It could have been a different game if we capitalized on the opportunities we created.Â
"We need to get better in the final third. I know this team will continue to fight and keep improving."
PROULX KEPT BUSY
Senior keeper Lysianne Proulx had a busy afternoon on the pitch for the Orange. She emerged with five saves, including a point-blank stop of Emily Knepler in the second half.Â
Cardinal keeper Gabrielle Kouzelos earned the shutout and made seven stops for Louisville.
Louisville finished with a 25-11 shot advantage, including an 8-7 margin in shots on goal.
THE ERLBECK ATTACK
Graduate student Olivia Erlbeck paced Syracuse's offense with five shots. Three of her efforts were on goal for the Orange.
TIVNAN SHOW FEATURES LAST-MINUTE TRY
Junior Jenna Tivnan had three shot attempts and two on net for Syracuse. She played a corner kick off her head in the final two minutes to provide the Orange with a scoring chance that was thwarted by Louisville.
FIRST TIME FIRST STRING
Senior Alina Miagkova and freshman Hannah Pilley each made their first starts for the Orange. Miagkova, from Russia, and Pilley, from New Zealand, were both delayed returning to Syracuse because of travel issues caused by the pandemic. Although they didn't start pre-season practice sessions with their teammates, both have played in the first two games.
Graduate student Natalie Weidenbach, who transferred from Texas, made her first Syracuse appearance in the opening half against Louisville. Kate Donovan, a redshirt junior, saw her initial game action of the campaign for the Orange.

In addition to Proulx, Syracuse received complete-game, 90-minute efforts from senior Shannon Aviza, freshman Lindsey Brick and junior Jenna Tivnan.
