
Penalty Kick Lifts Cavaliers By Orange

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia converted on a penalty kick in the 71st minute for the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win against Syracuse in men's soccer action on Friday, Oct. 30.
"It's difficult, (in a game like this) the difference was a decision by a linesman," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "It was a good ACC college match. I'm proud of our guys. We traveled down here and I felt we deserved to get something out of this game. It's a little bit tough to take."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams had scoring chances in the first half. Syracuse (0-3-2) put numbers forward and just missed connecting in the box on a couple of runs at goal, while the Cavaliers hit the post twice with most of their chances coming on the counterattack. Virginia recorded the only shot on frame in the first 45 minutes, but Orange goalkeeper Russell Shealy made the save.

The Cavaliers (2-2-1) took the lead for good in the 71st minute on a penalty kick after Syracuse's Simon Triantafillou was called for a hand ball in the box. Andreas Ueland hit the left post with his shot, but it deflected into the right corner of the goal to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 advantage.

The Orange continued to create scoring chances. Virginia goalkeeper Alex Rando just got a piece of senior Luther Archimede's header in the in the 84th minute to knock it over the crossbar. Less than a minute later, senior Sondre Norheim's shot off a corner kick in the 85th minute was saved by a Virginia defender. The Orange's final chance came with less than a minute remaining, but graduate student Matt McDonnell put his shot just over the crossbar as the Cavaliers held on for the victory.

OF NOTE
Shealy made his second straight start in goal for Syracuse and finished with four saves. He was coming off a career-best performance against Virginia Tech when he posted eight saves.

The Orange recorded 14 shots and four corner kicks to Virginia's 13 shots and two corner kicks.
