Former Orange standout Tajon Buchanan and the New England Revolution look to continue their magical run in the MLS playoffs when they take on Columbus in the Eastern Conference final on Sunday, Dec. 6.
Â
Buchanan has played a major role in helping the No. 8 seed Revolution advance through the playoffs. After playing primarily at forward during the 2020 regular season, he switched to right back during New England's ongoing run. Buchanan scored a goal in round one in an upset of Philadelphia and drew a penalty in the conference semifinal against Orlando City.
Â
He was one of only two Revolution players to appear in every regular-season match for the Revolution, and has also started all three of New England's Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoff wins to date. Buchanan, who is in his second professional season, has made 33 regular season appearances, with 15 starts, and posted two goals, and four assists. In his postseason career, all this season, Buchanan has recorded one goal in three starts.
Â
A win in Sunday's match would cap off a remarkable week for the Brampton, Ontario native. Buchanan was named the Canadian Men's Youth International Player of the Year on Tuesday. He received his first call-up as one-of-20 players selected to represent Canada at the Concacaf Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship in March. However, the tournament was postponed due to COVID-19.
Â
Buchanan was selected by New England with the No. 9 pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft after signing a Generation adidas deal following his sophomore season at Syracuse. He recorded career highs in points (20), goals (8) and assists (4) in 2018, leading the Orange in points and goals. Buchanan scored multiple goals in three matches, including a career-high three in Syracuse's win against St. Bonaventure. He became the first member of the Orange to post 20 points in a season since Ben Polk had 28 in 2015.
Â
As a freshman, Buchanan started all 18 games and tied for third on the team in points (10) and was third in goals (4). He was voted to the All-ACC Third Team as well as the ACC All-Freshman Team.
Â
Sunday's MLS Eastern Conference final will be televised at 3 p.m. on ABC.
