SYRACUSE, NY - The Orange, in their first ACC match of the year, won 4-3 over Boston College to remain undefeated (6-0, 1-0 ACC) on the year. Every match counted as Syracuse relied on strong singles play to come away with the win. The 6-0 start is the best start for the Orange since the 2016 season when they started 7-0. Miranda Ramirez, Kim Hansen and Zeynep Erman all remain undefeated as they each earned their sixth singles victories today.
Â
"I couldn't be prouder today," head coach Younes Limam said. "Something this team does really well is they never panic and they have a lot of grit. Every match today was tight and I couldn't be prouder of how they handled those tough situations."
Â
How it happened:
It was a rough start to the day for the Orange in doubles play. Sofya Treshcheva and Kim Hansen kicked things off against BC's Elene Tsokilauri and Laura Lopez. The Syracuse duo started off strong, going up 2-0, but the Eagles pair stormed back to take the match 6-2. Miranda Ramirez and partner Yusupova battled against Yufei Long and Kylie Wilcox in the No. 1 doubles slot. After trading games and deadlocked at 4-4, Ramirez and Yusupova were unable to escape with a win, ultimately falling 4-6. With the doubles point secured for Boston College, Orange coach Limam chose to abandon the third doubles match, with Sofya Golubovskaya and Zeynep Erman up 5-3 at the time.
Â
Erman started singles play off strong, defeating Hailey Wilcox in a 6-1, 6-4 two set sweep for her sixth win of the year. Erman remains undefeated in singles play. Miranda Ramirez kept the momentum going for the Orange, taking her first set 7-5 against Natasha Irani. In her second set, Ramirez found herself down 1-4, but came back to secure a two set sweep, taking the second set 7-5 and securing her sixth singles win on the year to stay unbeaten.
Â
In the second singles spot, Golubovskaya made her return from injury against the Eagle's Kylie Wilcox. Golubovskaya dropped the first set 3-6, but dominated the second set 6-1. In the third and final set, Sofya was unable to overcome Wilcox, and fell 4-6, evening the team score at two. However, the tie didn't last long, as Kim Hansen defeated Elene Tsokilauri in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 6-0. Her dominant third set gave her a sixth straight singles victory in her young career, and put the Orange up 3-2.
Â
Sofya Treshcheva fought her way to a third set against BC's Laura Lopez. After a hard fought tiebreaker, Treshcheva was unable to secure the win, falling 7-5, 2-6, 6-7 (5-7). With the team score tied at three, a winner-takes-all match at No. 1 singles between Yusupova and Boston College's Yufei Long headed into a third set. Yusupova fought her way from down 2-5 to take a 6-5 lead. With her teammates and coaches watching, up 40-15, and a conference victory on the line, Yusupova delivered a short backhand volley to secure the winning point.
