The women's soccer team gathered on Sunday with a special teammate, Graeclin "Bean" Russo, to participate in a virtual 5K organized by Team IMPACT.
Russo, a 10-year-old from Reynolds Elementary School in Baldwinsville, N.Y., signed with the Orange a year ago as part of Team IMPACT, a non-profit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with college athletic teams. Russo lives with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), a type of cancer that can damage tissue or cause lesions to form in one or more places in the body. Â
Syracuse captains Shannon Aviza, Kailee Coonan and Kate Hostage were among the squad members who joined with Russo to navigate the 5K.
The Team IMPACT Unstoppable (Virtual) 5K was organized to help raise funds and awareness for the program. A total of 72 schools participated, including Boston College, Cornell, Connecticut, Duke, Florida State, Penn State, Providence, Maryland, Temple, Villanova, Virginia and Xavier. The event helped raise $21,000.
A number of different Syracuse Athletic programs have partnered with Team IMPACT including field hockey, men's basketball, and men's and women's lacrosse. Since the Team IMPACT program started in 2011, kids have been matched with teams on over 700 campuses.
