Syracuse opens its somewhat delayed 2020 season at Pittsburgh on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7:00 p.m. The game will be shown on the ACC Network.
The Pittsburgh Series
Syracuse has a 12-8-4 advantage in the all-time series with Pittsburgh. The Orange are unbeaten in the last three matches with the Panthers, winning two and tying last-year's encounter.Â
Thursday's pairing will be the 25th between the two rivals, making Pitt the most familiar foes of Syracuse's foes.
Playing With A Full Deck
A primary difference between the 2019 opener and the 2020 campaign beginner for Syracuse Coach Nicky Adams is the increased weaponry she has at her disposal. A year ago, in Adams' inaugural season with the Orange, she inherited a roster decimated by injury before the first match was contested.
"There were times we didn't know if we would be able to dress 13 players," Adams noted. "This year we feel a lot better about our personnel."
She has rebuilt Syracuse with a core group returning from last fall and 11 newcomers.Â
Senior Syracuse Anchors
The Orange own a trio of three-time letter winners on the club. Defenders Shannon Aviza and Clarke Brown, along with midfielder Mackenzie Vlachos each enter their fourth seasons at Syracuse. While Aviza and Brown are expected to be part of a last line of defense, Vlachos will be a key cog in a more aggressive offensive approach in 2020.
Another critical performer in the senior class is goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx. She started all 16 games a year ago and led the ACC in saves (96).  Â
Transfer Of Power
No less than five Division I transfers have bolstered the Syracuse lineup:
Syracuse University Athletics remains committed to doing everything it can to support and protect the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes, our staff and the campus and Syracuse communities. All decisions will be science0based and informed by public health and guidance as provided by county, state and public health officials. If fans are permitted to attend games – in some capacity – Syracuse Athletics will announce plans for spectators to secure admission to the events. Fans will be required to sit in their socially-distanced seat locations and wear a face covering.
