Syracuse earned its fifth-straight win in dominating fashion on Friday night at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Five different Orange scored as No. 11 Syracuse shutout three-time defending national champion North Carolina 5-0 to improve to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. It marks the first time the Orange beat UNC since the 2015 National Championship game.
"I am just so happy for [the team]," said head coach Ange Bradley after the win. "We came up short three times to UNC last year. I know how much it meant to them to be able to compete and finally get that breakthrough win. To be able to do it on our home field is awesome."
Pleun Lammers made a diving attempt to connect with a pass from Quirine Comans on a breakaway and tipped the ball over Abigail Taylor's head to put the Orange ahead 1-0 in the ninth minute. Less than two minutes later Hailey Bitters tipped in a pass from Comans on the goal line to give the Orange a 2-0 advantage on the No. 5 Tar Heels.
Carolin Hoffman's first goal of the season made it 3-0 when she scored from the top of the circle on a penalty corner at 17:57. Syracuse successfully defended four-straight Carolina corners in the final minute of the first half to hold its three goal lead at the break.
Claire Cooke's tipped in shot on a ball from outside the circle by Laura Graziosi gave the Orange insurance with just over 10 minutes to go in regulation, making it 4-0 Orange. Junior Charlotte de Vries sealed the deal with a reverse chip shot, unassisted, at 52:02 to give the Orange a 5-0 lead. The Orange defense held tough as the final minutes counted down for 'Cuse to secure its third-straight shutout of the season.
Brooke Borzymowski earned her fourth win in goal for the Orange and made one save on the only shot on goal UNC had all game. Syracuse had a 12-11 advantage in shots but the Tar Heels had eight penalty corners to 'Cuse's six.
It was the worst loss for North Carolina since a 7-0 loss to Maryland in 2008 and first time the Tar Heels were shutout since a 3-0 loss to Duke in 2016.
'Cuse is now 2-0 in the ACC with both wins being against top-5 opponents. Syracuse began ACC play with a 3-1 win on the road at No. 3 Boston College on Sept. 17.
The Orange look for their sixth-straight win on Sunday when they host Columbia at 1 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium. It's Ottos Kids Club Day and all kids club members are encouraged to attend. Fans who can't make it to the game can watch live on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX) through the ESPN app.
