Syracuse opens its Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) home slate on Friday, Oct. 1 against #5 North Carolina. The game will be televised nationally on ACC Network at 4 p.m. Following Friday's ACC game, Syracuse will play its third Ivy League opponent, Columbia, in its last four games on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. for Otto's Kids Club Day.Â
The first 50 fans in attendance to Friday night's game against the Tar Heels will receive a LGO (Let's Go Orange) lanyard and there will be an Otto t-shirt toss at halftime.Â
Syracuse (6-2, 1-0 ACC) and Carolina (6-3, 1-0 ACC) bring storied rivalry to Coyne Friday night. The Orange and Tar Heels met three times during the unique 2020-21 season. All three games were decided by one goal, in favor of UNC. North Carolina went on to win its third-straight NCAA Championship in the spring. Two of the 2020-21 matchups between the two were decided 4-3 in overtime, including the ACC Tournament semifinals.
The Orange have put that behind them now as Syracuse boasts a loaded roster with talent from top to bottom including eight different players with two or more goals this season. Leading the way is Quirine Comans and Pleun Lammers, each with five goals on the season. Charlotte de Vries, Laura Graziosi and Eefke van den Nieuwenhof each have three goals of their own. Defensively, Syracuse is holding opponents to 1.13 goals per game and 6.5 shots per game. Brooke Borzymowski has earned three-straight wins in goal for the Orange and combines with Louise Pert for four shutouts on the season.Â
Carolina is led by Erin Matson, this week's ACC Offensive Player of the Week. Matson's 13 goals and eight assists rank second in the country in points per game (3.78) and atop the ACC. North Carolina ranks No. 1 in the nation in assists per game (3.67) and is second in goals per game (4.56)Â this season. The Tar Heels got off to a rocky start losing their first two games of the season on the road against Michigan and Iowa but since have gone 6-1 including a dominating 6-1 win over Boston College to open up ACC play.Â
Columbia is 6-1 this season and will face Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 2 before coming to Coyne on Sunday. The Lions are led by Kelsey Farkas who has a team-best four goals and four assists for 12 points this season. Ten different student-athletes have scored this season as Columbia is outscoring its opponents 23-10 through their first seven games. Columbia's goalkeeper, Alexa Conomikes, has a 1.30 goals against average and a .804 save percentage one shutout. She's played all 416 minutes in goal for the Lions this season.
