Hoffmann Named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

Syracuse University graduate student Carolin Hoffmann is the latest ACC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week. Hoffmann's exceptional play in the midfield helped guide Syracuse (8-2, 2-0 ACC) to a pair of shutout wins over No. 5 North Carolina and Columbia at J.S. Coyne Stadium over the weekend.Â
Hoffmann helped guide the defensive effort in No. 11 Syracuse's 5-0 rout of No. 5 North Carolina on Friday night. Her play in the midfield slowed the UNC offense that entered the game averaging 4.56 points per game and held the league's leading scorer Erin Matson without a goal or assists for just the first time this season and first time in ACC play since Oct. 2019. Syracuse's 5-0 win over the three-time defending national champions was the first time North Carolina had been held scoreless in a game since 2016 and it was the Tar Heels worst loss since a 7-0 loss to Maryland in 2008. On the offensive side of the ball, Hoffmann scored 'Cuse's third goal of the game, on a penalty corner, for her first goal of the season.Â
The fifth-year captain led Syracuse to a 3-0 win over Columbia on Sunday in non-conference play. The Orange held the Lions to just one shot in the win.Â
Hoffmann is the fourth Syracuse player to earn ACC weekly accolades this season. Pleun Lammers (Aug. 31) and Quirine Comans (Sept. 14) were previously named Offensive Player of the Week while SJ Quigley (Sept. 21) was named Defensive Player of the Week. Syracuse has more ACC Player of the Week selections than any other team so far this season.Â
The Orange ride a six game win streak into Friday night's ACC game against No. 15 Wake Forest (5-5, 1-2 ACC) at 6 p.m.Â
