
#7 Orange Beat #15 Wake Forest to win Seventh Straight

No. 7 Syracuse extended its win streak to seven straight with a 2-1 win over #15 Wake Forest on Friday night at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the ACC while the Demon Deacons move to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in league play.Â
Quirine Comans put the Orange ahead early with a goal in the ninth minute. She was fed a pass from Pleun Lammers from the low corner and found the back of the goal for the sixth time this season. Syracuse held its 1-0 lead through halftime and outshot Wake Forest 7-2 and held a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners.Â
Wake Forest tied the game at 42:52 when Hannah Maxwell scored in a breakaway. The Demon Deacons were applying pressure late in the game but the Orange maintained composure. Claire Cooke had an opportunity when she entered the offensive circle but was tripped up by a Deacon defender resulting in a penalty stroke after review.Â
Senior Laura Graziosi stepped up and took the stroke, converting with ease, for a 2-1 lead at 57:13. Syracuse controlled possession as time wound down to secure the fourth win over a ranked opponent this season for Syracuse.Â
Syracuse held Wake Forest to four total shots, three on goal, while firing off 13 of their own.Â
The Orange continue their four game home stand on Sunday, Oct. 10 when they host Colgate (0-9) at 1 p.m. Syracuse is welcoming back it's former players for Alumni Day and at halftime will recognize Christy Gaitten '90 a former Orange captain who passed away this past spring.
