SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange took #3 Pittsburgh to five sets on Friday before more than 630 fans in the Women's Building. Senior Polina Shemanova led the Orange with 19 kills, one assist, two aces, and nine digs, in the 3-2 loss to the Panthers.
"This match was one of our best," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "We are obviously disappointed with the result, but I would take this loss to #3 Pitt over some of our other wins. We found our rhythm in the third set. We have all the pieces we need. A big thanks is owed to the fans. Their energy really helped us tonight."
The Orange (16-11 overall, 5-10 ACC) lost the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-18, before rallying to win the third and fourth sets. Syracuse controlled set three after taking a 7-6 lead en route to a 25-16 victory. In a back-and-forth set four, the Orange used a 5-2 run to even the match at two sets with a 25-22 win. The Panthers won set five 15-9.
Junior Marina Markova contributed 20 kills and eight digs, while senior setter Elena Karakasi had 45 assists and 13 digs and sophomore libero Lauren Hogan posted 18 digs and five assists.
