WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Week Asa Goldstock is one of five members of the Syracuse women's lacrosse squad named to the 2021 Tewaaraton Award Watch List announced on Thursday, March 11. She is joined the list by fellow graduate student Kerry Defliese and juniors Megan Carney, Sarah Cooper and Meaghan Tyrrell.
Â
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top female and male college lacrosse player in the nation. Syracuse's five nominees tie North Carolina for the most for any school.
Â
Goldstock currently ranks second in the nation in save percentage (.694) and fourth in goals-against average (5.80). She recorded 11 saves against then No. 5 Stony Brook, including four on free-position attempts. Goldstock was named US Lacrosse Player of the Week as well as IWLCA and ACC Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts. She followed that performance with a career-high 17 saves at No. 10 Duke and again earned conference defensive player of the week accolades.
Â
Defliese and Cooper anchor Syracuse's defense that has not allowed more than six goals in a game this season. The group gave up just one goal in the first half at Duke, the lowest total it has allowed in a half since shutting out Maryland in the first half on February 29, 2020. Cooper leads the team in ground balls (12) and caused turnovers (5), while Defliese has three ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control.
Â
Carney and Tyrrell have led the Orange attack through the first three games of 2021. Both have 16 points on 10 goals and six assists. Carney posted five goals and six points in Syracuse's victory against Stony Brook, while Tyrrell had five goals and a career-high seven points in the Orange's win against Duke.
Â
Players not named to this initial list will have opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions will be announced on April 2, before the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees on April 23.
Â
Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced in early May. The Tewaaraton Award recipients will be chosen after the conclusion of the collegiate lacrosse season.
