
Orange Lose Series Opener at #14 Duke

The Syracuse Softball team lost 5-3 to #14 Duke in the series opener on Friday night. The two meet again for a double header on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and will conclude the four-game series with the finale at 5 p.m. on Sunday. All three of the remaining games in the series will be televised nationally on ACC Network.Â
Duke took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Caroline Jacobsen scored on a passed ball. The Orange responded when Gabby Teran scored on a throwing error by Duke's shortstop when Angel Jasso hit an infield single. An RBI double in the third and RBI single in the fourth gave the Blue Devils a 3-1 lead. Duke scored two runs in the sixth to lead 5-1 but Calista Almer scored Paris Woods on a RBI double in the seventh making it 5-2. Almer then scored to make it 5-3 on a throwing error by Duke's pitcher but the Orange comeback came up short.Â
Five members of the Syracuse squad had a hit in the loss while Almer and Rebecca Clyde both recorded extra base hits. Jolie Gustave was given the loss allowing four runs on four hits in four innings of relief. Alexa Romero earned the start and tossed two innings and allowed one hit on one run.Â
Syracuse moves to 6-6 overall and has three games remaining against the Blue Devils in Durham. The first of which begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 20.Â
