Orange Drop Double Header at Duke, Finish Series Sunday at 5 pm

The Syracuse softball team lost a pair of road games at #14 Duke on Saturday afternoon. The Orange and Blue Devils will wrap up the four-game ACC series Sunday at 5 p.m. ET on ACC Network.Â
Duke used just five innings in the first game of the day, beating Syracuse 11-0. The Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead into the third inning and erupted for eight runs to lead 10-0 after three. Duke added a run in the bottom of the fourth and Syracuse responded breaking up Peyton St. George's no hitting when Maxine Barnes singled to center field. She advanced to second on a pop up to shortstop by Makena Fidler. The Orange were unable to score a run ultimately losing to the Blue Devils, 11-0.Â
In game two, Duke jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Once Lindsey Hendrix settled in the circle, the pace of the game slowed. The Orange scored in the top of the single when Rebecca Clyde hit an RBI single up the middle to plate Barnes. Duke responded in the bottom of the third with an RBI double to lead 5-1. Barnes hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to make it 5-2 but a home run by Duke in the fifth once again stretched the lead to five runs at 7-2. Neli Casares-Maher hit her team-leading third home run of the season to make it 7-3 but the Orange ran out of time losing by four runs.Â
Kaia Oliver threw two innings and earned the loss in game one moving to 3-3 overall this season. Miranda Hearn and Jolie Gustave also saw time in the circle for the Orange. St. George earned her 10th win of the season for Duke and recorded six strikeouts in the game.Â
Hendrix threw a complete game in the back end of the double header. She walked five and struck out five in six innings of work.Â
The Orange (6-8) face Duke in the series finale at 5 p.m. on ACC Network Sunday, March 21.Â
