The No. 11 Syracuse field hockey team lost, 2-1, to No. 13 Virginia at J.S. Coyne Stadium Friday afternoon. The Orange move to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while UVA improves to 7-11 and 4-7 in the ACC. Syracuse wraps up the 2020-21 home slate on Sunday vs. No. 1 North Carolina at 1 p.m. Fans can watch live on ACCNX through the ESPN app.Â
After a goalless first quarter the Cavaliers got on the scoreboard first when Meghen Hengerer slipped the ball past Syracuse's defense on a rebounded penalty corner shot in the 20th minute. Virginia held the lead into halftime and held a 3-2 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.Â
Hailey Bitters tied the game four minutes into the second half when Pleun Lammers sent a pass into the circle where she met a diving Bitters. It was the second goal of the 2020-21 season for Bitters and first since the fall ACC Tournament against UNC. Syracuse outshot Virginia 5-1 in the third frame and had three corners to UVA's one.Â
With 4:06 to play in regulation Annie McDonough found the back of the cage when she tipped a shot over Emily Streib's head to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead which held through the final horn.Â
Syracuse finished the game with a 12-5 advantage in shots and nine corners. Eefke van den Nieuwenhof led the team with six shots, five on goal.Â
The Orange return to action on Sunday for the regular season finale against the Tar Heels. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium.Â
