#14 Syracuse Scores Six in Win Over Vermont

The No. 14 Syracuse field hockey team produced its second shutout of opening weekend with a 6-0 win over Vermont on Sunday afternoon. Five different Orange scored in the win including two from sophomore Eefke van den Nieuwenhof.Â
Both teams played to a 0-0 draw in the first quarter as most of the game was controlled by the midfield with neither team unable to get a shot off. Van den Nieuwenhof then scored her first of two goals in the 18th minute on a corner, assisted by Tess Queen and SJ Quigley. Less then a minute later the trio connected once again on a penalty corner and Syracuse took a 2-0 lead which would held through the remainder of the first half.Â
Laura Graziosi wasted no time when she scored on a pass from Quirine Comans to make it 3-0 Syracuse a minute into the second half. Florine van Boetzelaer then added to the Orange lead in the 34th minute when Graziosi sent a shot from the left post that found van Boetzelaer who's clean finish gave Syracuse a 4-0 lead.Â
Hailey Bitters scored her second goal of the season, unassisted, when she found the back of the cage on a rebounded save during a Syracuse corner. Pleun Lammers, who had a hat trick in Friday's season opener, scored Syracuse's sixth and final goal in the opening minute of play in the fourth frame.Â
Louise Pert and Brooke Borzymowski spilt time in goal for the Orange with Pert earning the start, and win, while Borzymowski saved the only Catamount shot of the afternoon. The Orange offense dominated with a 27-1 advantage in shots and 13-2 in penalty corners. Vermont's goalkeeper Sierra Espeland made 14 saves in her first loss of the season.Â
The Orange are back in action Saturday, Sept. 4, when they host Kent State (1-1) at 1 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Golden Flashes lost their season opener 3-1 to Michigan State but bounced back with a 3-0 shutout win over Saint Louis on Sunday.Â
