The No. 14 Syracuse Orange (2-1) were handed their first loss of the season in overtime Saturday afternoon when Kent State (3-1) scored three minutes into the extra frame to win, 2-1. Syracuse hits the road for the remainder of September for five-straight road games beginning Saturday, Sept. 10 at #15 Rutgers.Â
Syracuse got on the board first when Pleun Lammers scored her fifth goal of the season to give the Orange a 1-0 lead just over seven minutes into the game. Lammers was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week earlier this week after posting four goals and an assist in Syracuse's opening week of the season. Carolin Hoffmann recorded her first assist of the season on Lammers goal.Â
The Orange held the one goal lead into halftime with a 8-2 advantage in shots and 4-2 edge in penalty corner opportunities. Syracuse's freshman goalkeeper Brooke Borzymowski recorded one save in the first frame.Â
Syracuse's goalkeepers split time in the cage for the third time this season with Louise Pert coming in for the third quarter. Seven minutes into the second half Kent State's Clara Rodriguez Seto scored unassisted when the ball took a bounce off her shot to sneak past Pert and even the game 1-1. Syracuse outshot the Golden Flashes 8-1 in the final two quarters but was unable to capitalize on some late-game opportunities resulting in the first overtime game at J.S. Coyne Stadium for the 2021 season.Â
Borzymowski returned to the cage for overtime. The Orange controlled majority of the opening minutes of overtime but in the 64th minute a pass from the left side of the cage by Helena Cambra Soler met an open Jenna McCrudden in the middle of the circle who challenged Borzymowski one-on-one for the win. It marked the first time Kent State has beat nationally-ranked opponents in back-to-back games since 2012. The Flashes previously beat No. 22 Ohio State earlier this week.Â
Syracuse moves to 2-1 on the season and returns to action next weekend with a pair of road games at Rutgers and UConn, their first two nationally-ranked opponents of the season. The five-game road stretch continues at Boston College on Sept. 17 for the first ACC game of the season on ACC Network.Â
