No. 16 Syracuse rallied form a two-goal deficit to force overtime against No. 8 Rutgers on Friday afternoon but a goal by Lucy Bannatyne in the 73rd minute handed the Orange their second-straight overtime loss and first road loss of the 2021 season. 'Cuse continues its five-game road swing Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at No. 12 UConn on Sunday.
"There were more pluses than minuses today," head coach Ange Bradley said. "Marie Sommer, Sienna Pegram, Tess Queen, Claire Cooke and Quirine Comans each stepped up for the team. We are learning and growing each day and are excited for our next opportunity. We played hard and never quit and that is Syracuse Hockey."
Freshman goalkeeper Brooke Borzymowski made a career-high 11 saves in the loss, including four in overtime.
Rutgers took an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of play when Gianna Mancini scored, unassisted, after the Scarlet Knights' third-straight corner opportunity. Rutgers held the one goal advantage into the halftime after outshooting the Orange 8-1.
The Scarlet Knights extended their lead to 2-0 when Carly Snarski scored form the back post at the 38:36 mark. A minute into the fourth quarter, Laura Graziosi cut the lead in half with a shot form the top of the circle for her second goal of the season.
Quirine Comans' first career goal came at the perfect time. With six minutes to go in regulation, Graziosi sent a shot in from just outside the circle that connected with Comans' in front of the cage who tipped the ball past Rutgers' goalkeeper to even the game 2-2.
Rutgers had a pair of shots on goal in the first overtime, which Borzymowski turned away with a pair of kick saves. Two and a half minutes into the second bonus period, Bannatyne took possession in the Syracuse zone and carried the ball the length of the field. She went one-on-one with Borzymowski and scored from 10 yards out sneaking her shot past Borzymowski's left side.
Rutgers outshot Syracuse 18-9 in the game and held a slight 7-5 advantage in corner opportunities. Borzymowski's 11 saves are the most in a game for an SU goalkeeper since Sarah Sinck's 11 against Boston College in 2019.
Sunday's game at No. 12 UConn, slated for 1 p.m., will be streamed on FloLive. Following Sunday's game, Syracuse will next play Saturday, Sept. 17 when it opens ACC play at No. 3 Boston College.
