The 14th-ranked Syracuse field hockey team (4-2) won its second-straight road game against a nationally-ranked opponent Friday night. The Orange earned a 3-1 win at No. 3 Boston College (6-1) handing the Eagles their first loss of the season. All three 'Cuse goals were scored in the open field of play while freshman goalkeeper Brooke Borzymowski earned her first win of the season making four saves along the way.Â
"I am very proud of our team's effort today," head coach Ange Bradley said. "We had a very good week to prepare for this moment. To go on the road and beat number three in the nation is a great step in our growth and development."Â
A Claire Cooke breakaway led to Charlotte de Vries scoring on a backhanded strike that crossed the cage and landed bottom corner in 20th minute of action to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead. With just over a minute to play in the first half, Florine van Boetzalaer made it 2-0 Syracuse when she scored off a blocked shot.Â
The Orange out shout the Eagles 10-2 in the first half and held a slim 2-1 advantage in penalty corners.Â
Syracuse added to its lead two minutes into the third quarter when Quirine Comans tipped in a shot by Laura Graziosi for a 3-0 lead. It marks the third-straight game Comans has scored a goal.Â
Thirty-eight seconds into the final frame Boston College's Margo Carlin scored on a breakaway to make it 3-1. Despite pulling goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy with three minutes to play, BC was unable to overcome the deficit as the Orange handed the Eagles their first loss of the season.
Syracuse begins the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) season 1-0 with Friday night's league win and improves to 2-1 in road games this season. The Orange continue their five-game road stretch Wednesday, with a midweek game at Cornell. Game time is set for 4 p.m.Â
