Charlotte de Vries' goal in the 39th minute was all the #12 Orange needed on Wednesday afternoon a Syracuse improved to 5-2 with a 1-0 road win at Cornell. 'Cuse concludes its five-game road stretch on Sunday, Sept. 26 with a 1 p.m. game at UPenn.Â
"I think we started passing the ball and moving the ball a little bit better than we did in the first half," head coach Ange Bradley said. "They just stayed focused on doing the things that we do well as a team. We were better in the second half and we were able to execute on a corner and that's an area that we definitely have to improve upon and grow."Â
The Orange had five shots in the first frame and two penalty corners but were unable to make something happen despite controlling the pace of the game for most of the quarter. A defensive save by sophomore Sienna Pegram at the 3:32 mark of the second period, right after Cornell's lone penalty corner of the game kept the Big Red off the scoreboard as the 0-0 draw held through the first half.Â
Syracuse led 7-2 in shots through the first half of play with the Orange defense seldom being tested. The Orange continued to pressure the Big Red back line to start the third quarter and broke through with a corner goal by de Vries, assisted by Quirine Comans and SJ Quigley, to put 'Cuse ahead 1-0.Â
Syracuse had 19 shots, eight on goal, in the one-goal win. The Orange held Cornell to two shots, marking the fifth time this season Syracuse has held its opponent to seven or less shots in a game. Brooke Borzymowski improved to 2-2 on the season in the win with the first shutout of her young career.Â
