'Cuse Soccer Earns All-ACC Academic Recognition

Pauline Machtens, Meghan Root and Jenna Tivnan represented Syracuse on the All-ACC Academic Team announced by the league on Thursday.
Machtens, a midfielder, enjoyed a stellar freshman campaign at Syracuse. She started all 15 games she played in and contributed three goals. Machtens found the net against Binghamton, at New Hampshire and against Pittsburgh. During the season she also was invited to train with the German national team, an opportunity she was able to take advantage of. Machtens is a native of Laverkusen, Germany. She is majoring in Sport and Human Dynamics in the David B. Falk College at Syracuse.
Root has been a mainstay in Syracuse's lineup since arriving on campus. The All-ACC Academic recognition is the third of her collegiate tenure. As a senior, she started each of the 17 games she participated in. Root scored three goals and added an assist in 2021. She tallied goals against Niagara, Louisville and Virginia Tech. Root also earned 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District and has received Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll laurels in each of the seven semesters she has been enrolled. She is a public relations major in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
Tivnan started and played in 12 games during the fall. She missed contests because of injuries. Tivnan received the All-ACC Academic Team laurels for the second time. She joined Root on the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All--District 1 Team. Tivnan has also earned Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll in every semester of her four years. She is a sport management major in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics.
Root and Tivnan were team captains in 2021.
The three honorees represent the second-most Syracuse has earned in one season since joining the ACC. The Orange had four in 2020 (Shannon Aviza, Kailee Coonan, Root and Tivnan) and also had three in 2013 (Brittany Anghel, Jacqueline Firenze and Taylor Haenlin).
To be eligible for the All-ACC Academic Team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade-point-average of 3.00 for the most recently completed semester and for their careers.
Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll is earned by receiving a semester grade-point-average of 3.00 for the completed semester.
