It's a clash for the top of the ACC standings as No. 11 Syracuse heads down to No. 1 North Carolina for a Friday matinee tilt at 3 p.m.
From the Start
- After two home games last week, the Orange hit the road for a clash against North Carolina, ranked first in the most recent NFHCA Coaches Poll.
- Syracuse remained unblemished at home, besting Stanford 4-0 Wednesday night on national television and a 5-0 win over Cornell on Sunday.
- Senior Charlotte de Vries had a hand in all four goals against Stanford while adding an assist against Cornell.
- The Orange are 7-0 at J.S. Coyne Stadium this year, allowing just three goals while working a five-game shutout streak on home turf.
- Syracuse is coming down the stretch for the regular season, with four games left of which three are ACC contests and all against top 25 opponents.Â
In the National Rankings
- Syracuse was ranked 11th in this week's Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll, picking up 601 points in the polls, 61 more points than last week.
- Syracuse's opponent this week, North Carolina, occupied the top spot with 1025 points and 41of the 42 first-place votes. Maryland was second with 999 points as Northwestern (900, 1), Penn State (887), and Iowa (874) rounded out the top five.
- Nine 2022 opponents were listed in this week's poll: No. 1 North Carolina (Oct. 14), No. 6 Virginia (L, 0-3), No. 7 Louisville (Oct. 21), No. 8 Princeton (L, 1-5), No. 12 Wake Forest (Oct. 28), No. 17 James Madison (W, 2-1 OT), No. 19 Boston College (W, 3-0), No. 20 Rutgers (Oct. 23), No. 24 Duke (W, 5-1).
- All seven ACC member institutions were ranked inside the top 25, including three in the top 10 (UNC, Louisville, Virginia).
- As of this week, all four remaining opponents are ranked in the top 20 of the coaches poll.
Hat Tricks Galore
- Four Syracuse field hockey players have hat tricks this season: Joy Haarman vs. Vermont (Aug. 27), Quirine Comans vs. Columbia (Sept. 4), Charlotte de Vries at No. 25 Monmouth (Sept. 11), and most recently Sabine van den Eijnden against Cornell (Oct. 9).
- Haarman, Comans and van den Eijnden each scored their first career hat tricks as members of the Orange program, while de Vries notched her second and first since 2019.
- Haarman scored her hat trick in a 33 minute span against the Catamounts while Comans notched her three goals in a 40 minute span against the Lions. De Vries accounted for all three goals in the Orange win at Monmouth, the first natural hat trick of her  'Cuse career.
- Van den Eijnden spread out her goals across a 40-minute span, book-ending the game at 5:47 and 46:31, adding a second-quarter strike at 22:20 as the fulcrum.
- Through the first three quarters of the Division I field hockey schedule, six programs have multiple hat tricks this season: Syracuse (4), UNH (3), UNC (2), Duke (2), Bryant (2). There were three hat tricks in the ACC last week.
Climbing the Charts
- Last Wednesday Charlotte de Vries scored the 37th goal of her Syracuse career, notching what stood as the game-winning goal in the 25th minute against Stanford.
- The goal moved de Vries into a three-way tie with eighth all-time in program history with Martina Loncarica and Heather Susek, both of whom repped the Orange from 2008-11.
- De Vries needs three more goals to join Lauren Brooks (2011-14) and Kristin Aronowicz (1999-02) for sixth all-time.
- De Vries racked five points against the Cardinal, bringing her career total to 88 (37g, 14), surpassing Shelley Magee's 85 points.
- On Sunday de Vries tied Heather Susek (37g, 15a) and Kelly Hambleton (34g, 21a) for 13th all-time at 89 points. One point will move de Vries into a tie for 12th with Lauren Brooks (2011-14) with 90 career points, two points pulls even with Aronowicz in 11th and three points gets de Vries into the top 10 and even with Kelsey Millman (2009-12) with 92 career points.

Williamson's #9 Jersey Officially Retired
- Former Syracuse field hockey standout Julie Williamson's #9 jersey was retired on Oct. 9 prior to the 2 p.m. match at J.S. Coyne Stadium against Cornell.
- Williamson is the first field hockey student-athlete to have a jersey retired.
- During her career (1991-94), Williamson helped lead Syracuse to its first-ever NCAA Tournament (1993) after capturing the BIG EAST title.Â
- Her Orange teams gathered a 52-20-7 mark in that span.
- She was the first three-time NFHCA All-American, a four-time All-Region pick. She graduated as the all-time points leader and still ranks seventh.
- Williamson was the first-ever Orange player selected to play for the USWNT, scoring against France for her first international goal on July 21, 1993.
