Back to the Elite 8 for the Syracuse University field hockey team as the No. 8 Orange draw a familiar foe in No. 2 Maryland, a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals, also contested in College Park. The Orange reach the Quarterfinals by way of a 5-2 win over No. 7 Princeton on Friday while the third-seeded Terps needed a penalty stroke in double over to move past 2021 runner up Liberty.
From the Start
- Back to the Elite 8 for the Syracuse University field hockey team, the only program in the ACC to reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons.
- Syracuse persevered against Princeton in the rain on Friday, trailing and tying the game twice before racking three second-half goals for a 5-2 win over the No. 7 Tigers.
- The Orange clash with a familiar foe in No. 2 and third-seeded Maryland; the two teams met on the same field in the same round a year ago. The host Terps nipped Syracuse 2-1.
- Syracuse makes back-to-back quarterfinal appearances for the first time since the three straight trips in 2014, 2015, and 2016.Â
In the National Rankings
- After reaching the ACC Semifinals for a third-straight season, the Orange jumped two spots in this week's NFHCA Coaches Poll, landing at eighth with 435 points.
- Syracuse's second-round foe, Maryland, held in the number two spot in the final poll with 609 points.
- North Carolina held at number one with 675 points and all 27 first-place votes. This weekend's host, Maryland, was slotted second with 609 points. Northwestern was third with 587 points, followed by Michigan (584) and Virginia (530) in fourth and fifth, respectively.
- With Maryland now on the schedule, 10 Syracuse opponents ranked in the final NFHCA Coaches Poll of the 2022 season: No. 1 North Carolina, No. 2 Maryland, No. 5 Virginia, No. 7 Princeton, No. 10 Wake Forest, No. 12 Louisville, No. 18 Rutgers, No. 20 Boston College, No. 22 James Madison, No. 24 Cornell.
Points on Points
- Any way you slice it, the Orange have put up serious points this year.
- Syracuse has tagged opponents for 72 goals, with four six-goal games this season (Vermont, Columbia, Dartmouth, Boston College Part II).
- Quirine Comans leads the Orange scoring efforts in both goals (16) and points (41) while Charlotte de Vries leads in assists (12) and is second in goals (14) and points (40).
- Comans is tied for 10th in program single-season record with her 41 points, drawing even with Maggie Befort (2008) and Kelly Hambleton (1999). Her 16 goals are tied for 13th in a single season with Megan Koons (1997). One more moves Comans into a five-way tie for ninth placeÂ
- De Vries' 40 points are just behind that mark in 13th place for a single season. A balanced scorer, de Vries' 12 assists this year are tied for the 14-most in a single season by an Orange player. One more helper moves de Vries into a four-way tie for the 11th most in a single season. Two more and it's into the top 10 for the senior.
Finishing Moves
- Boasting one of the highest-powered offenses not only in the ACC but nationally, Syracuse has scored 72 goals through the NCAA First Round.
- The Orange bring two tendencies to games: Strike quickly with 15 combined goals in the first quarter, and making adjustments.
- To date, Syracuse has scored well over half its total goals in the second half, putting in 46 tallies in the final 30 minutes and overtime.
- Syracuse is the only team in the ACC with at least 30 second-half goals. The Orange have been particularly potent in the third quarter, racking 21 goals after the break.
- The Orange have two of the top-five scoring quarters in the ACC, leading the league in the third (22), the fourth (23). UNC has the most goals in the second (24) and leads the first quarter with 21.
Orange in the Old Line State
- There are several Old Line State connections this weekend as the Orange head for College Park, Maryland.
- Syracuse head coach Ange Bradley spent four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland (1997-2000). Bradley's first head coaching gig was 45 minutes up the road at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland where she spent four seasons.
- Sophomore netminder Brooke Borzymowski hails from Fallston, Maryland, located in Northern Baltimore County and roughly an hour from College Park.
- Sophomore forward/midfielder Vivian Rowan calls Chevy Chase, Maryland home, roughly 10 miles from College Park (or about 25 minutes because I495).
- Freshman Lana Hamilton is from Odenton, Maryland, just 30 minutes northeast of UMD.
Williamson's #9 Jersey Officially Retired
- Former Syracuse field hockey standout Julie Williamson's #9 jersey was retired on Oct. 9 prior to the 2 p.m. match at J.S. Coyne Stadium against Cornell.
- Williamson is the first field hockey student-athlete to have a jersey retired.
- During her career (1991-94), Williamson helped lead Syracuse to its first-ever NCAA Tournament (1993) after capturing the BIG EAST title.Â
- Her Orange teams gathered a 52-20-7 mark in that span.
- She was the first three-time NFHCA All-American, a four-time All-Region pick. She graduated as the all-time points leader and still ranks seventh.
- Williamson was the first-ever Orange player selected to play for the USWNT, scoring against France for her first international goal on July 21, 1993.
