Over the next few weeks, the incoming 2022 field hockey class will be announced. We start the series with this week's Welcome Wednesday on Abby Neitch.
Abigail 'Abby' Neitch a goalkeeper from western New York will attend Syracuse and play field hockey for the Orange next fall. Neitch, a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Region selection, is a three-time All-State and Section VI selection who was a five-year letterwinner on the Holland High School field hockey team while also competing on the varsity track and field team.
"Abby is a great local talent that has been developed under the coaching of former Syracuse alum Dalton Beaver," head coach Ange Bradley said. "Abby has great size, quickness, and competitive spirit. She is passionate about Syracuse, and I am excited to see her challenge for a starting position in goal."
Neitch is a three-time All-Western New York (WNY) First Team selection and a four-time ECIC All-Star (2018-21). She earned All-WNY Second Team honors as a freshman in 2018.
The 5-foot-6 goalie capped of a stellar high school career with 259 saves on 296 shots faced for an .875 save percentage and a 2.11 goals against average. Neitch was tabbed the 2021 All-WNY Co-Player of the Year at the conclusion of her senior campaign which she served as team captain for the second-straight year.
Neitch competed at the 2018 U14 National Futures Championship, U16 National Futures Championship in 2019 and the U16 Stars and Stripes game at NFC that same year. In 2021 she competed with her club at the U19 Nexus Championship.
Off the field, Neitch is very active in her campus community service on the student council all four years at Holland HS as the secretary and most recently the president. She's been the Class of '22 class president all four years of high school and is a member of the National Honors Society, Key Club and Varsity Club, all in which she held leadership positions with.
Neitch plans to study civil engineering in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse and most admires former Orange goalkeeper and national champion Jess Jecko who she says is a great female role model whom she's looked up to as a goalkeeper since meeting her at young age.
