Goes Trophy On the Line Saturday
4/15/2022 2:16:00 PM | Men's Rowing
For the 65th time in history Syracuse, Navy and Cornell will race for the Goes Trophy on Saturday afternoon at Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J. The annual race, which is being contest for the first time since 2019, rotates between host sites but due to projected high winds in Annapolis, Md., the three teams will race at a neutral site location. Additionally, the Stagg Cup, which is awarded to the team with the best combined finish between the varsity eight, 2V8 and 3V8 will be awarded.Â
"The team is excited to race the Goes Trophy again after a two-year hiatus," assistant coach Jason Elefant said. "Any time you line up Syracuse, Cornell and Navy the racing is intense. The history behind these programs brings out another level of competition that you just can't appreciate until you've experienced it firsthand.
Our 1V and 2V are coming off a successful weekend in California at the Pac-12 Invite, so it will be a stern challenge for our guys to refocus and attack this weekend after a short week of practice" added Elefant. "Both the 3V and 4V crews had a strong start to their season in a scrimmage against Colgate on April 3rd. They are chomping at the bit to get on the racecourse again. They're eager to show everyone what they've been up to these past few weeks."Â
Ironically, the last time the three nationally-ranked teams raced for the Goes Trophy, the location was moved to Princeton, N.J. for a similar precaution for weather. In 2020 the spring racing season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and last season Cornell was unable to compete so the trophies were not awarded when Syracuse and Navy raced in a dual last spring.Â
The Orange, who rank sixth in this week's IRCA Coaches' Poll, currently posses both the Goes Trophy and the Stagg Cup. In 2019, Syracuse won the Goes Trophy crossing the finish in 5:29.5 ahead of Navy (5:31.6) and Cornell (5:33.8). It was the first time Syracuse reclaimed the Goes Trophy since 2011. That year, the Orange also won the 2V8 and 3V8 races to win the Stagg Cup for team points.Â
Navy's top crew currently ranks No. 11 in the IRCA Coaches' Poll while Cornell sits 14th.Â
Racing will take place at Lake Carnegie. The team area and spectator area will both be at the finish line, located at 875 Princeton-Kingston Road in Princeton, N.J. No spectators or visitors will be permitted at the Princeton University Boathouse. Fans unable to attend can watch live via the Navy Crew Facebook page.Â
