The No. 6 Orange retained the Goes Trophy in convincing fashion Saturday afternoon at Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J. Syracuse's varsity eight finished the 2,000-meter course in 5:30.90 while No. 14 Cornell finished second just under five seconds behind while No. 11 Navy was third across the line in 5:39.00. Syracuse's second varsity eight and third varsity eight also won their respective races to keep the Stagg Cup in SU's possession for another year.
"It was a successful day here on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.," said assistant coach Jason Elefant. "Syracuse won all three races in varsity, 2V and 3V while placing third in the fourth varsity eight. In the process we have retained the Goes Trophy for the varsity eight as well as the Stagg Cup for team points across the 1V, 2V, and 3V. This was a good challenge for the guys coming back from California last week to get up and ready for a tough opponent on a short week of practice. I was really happy with the way the guys responded and took care of business."
The 2V8 won by open water finishing in 5:45.30 while Navy (5:49.99) was second and Cornell (5:56.49) was third. In the 3V, Syracuse cruised to a win matching the 2V's time to beat Navy (5:48.48) and Cornell (5:49.05).
The 4V8 race was the first of the afternoon. Navy's 4V8 and 5V8 placed first and second, Cornell was third and the Orange were the final team across the line.
This marks the first time the Orange have retained the Goes Trophy since winning three-straight from 2006-08 and the first time retaining the Stagg Cup since winning back-to-back in 1998 and 1999.
Syracuse has two weeks to prepare for its next two cup races. The Orange travel to Fairlee, Vt., to face Dartmouth for the Packard Cup on April 30 and Boston University for the Conlan Cup on Sunday, May 1.
About the Goes Trophy
Clifford "Tip" Goes, Syracuse Class of 1914, created the Goes Trophy in 1955 to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. The trophy is presented to the winner of the annual race between the schools.
About the Stagg Trophy
Presented to the team compiling the most overall points in the heavyweight races between Navy, Cornell and Syracuse, the Stagg Trophy is named after Norman G. Stagg, the late Tompkins County judge and former Cornell oarsman.
