Orange Head to Vermont for Final Regular Season Races
4/29/2022 3:54:00 PM | Men's Rowing
The Syracuse men's rowing team is back in action this weekend at Lake Morey in Fairlee, Vt. The Orange are set to race Dartmouth College on Saturday for the Packard Cup and Boston University Sunday for the Conlan Cup. Dartmouth will join the Sunday race vs. BU in a three-team race.
Saturday morning's races begin at 9 am with the varsity eight race between No. 6 Syracuse and No. 5 Dartmouth for the Packard Cup. Racing continues with the 2V8 at 9:20 followed by the 3V8 at 9:40 and the 4V8 at 10 am on the 2,000-meter course at Lake Morey.Â
Syracuse and Dartmouth are two of the top crews in the east this season. Last year's Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship featured the Big Green edging Syracuse to earn a spot on the medal stand with Dartmouth claiming bronze and Syracuse settling for fourth place. This year, both teams are neck-and-neck in the national and eastern standings. While Dartmouth ranks No. 5 in the nation and Syracuse is No. 6, the two are currently seeded 3rd and 4th in the East.
Dartmouth is coming off a sweep of No. 7 Brown in Providence last weekend. The Big Green has one loss on the season to then-#1 Yale and has beat crews from Columbia, Holy Cross and MIT.
On Sunday, all three teams will line up beginning at 9 am with the 4V8. The 3V8 race will begin at 9:20 followed by the 2V8 at 9:40 and the varsity eight race at 10 am. Syracuse and No. 14 Boston University will race for the Conlan Cup in Sunday's 1V8 race, marking the first time the cup will be contested since 2019.
BU has been idle since the Pac-12 Challenge three weeks ago in Redwood City, Calif. The Terriers lost to then-#2 Washington and #3 Cal while securing a win over Oregon State who was ranked No. 18 at the time.
Before Sunday's race against Syracuse and Dartmouth at Lake Morey, BU will race No. 12 Wisconsin in Boston on Saturday.
Syracuse currently holds the Packard Cup having won the varsity race in 2019 while BU holds the Conlan Cup since 2019. Syracuse and BU raced last season (2021) in the regular season and the Orange earned the win but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rosters being heavily effected, the Conlan Cup was not contested. Syracuse last won the Conlan Cup in 2017.
