SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Following a dominant showing against No. 22 Notre Dame, No. 24 Syracuse men's soccer will play Niagara under the lights at the SU Soccer Stadium on Tuesday, September 13 at 7 p.m. Admission to the match is free. Fans can watch the in-state contest on ACC Network Extra.
ORANGE UPDATE:
The Orange (4-0-1, 1-0-0) opened their Atlantic Coast Conference schedule with a lopsided 1-0 win over defending conference champion Notre Dame. Sophomore midfielder Giona Leibold scored the game winning goal in the 22nd minute, as Syracuse never looked back, outshooting the Fighting Irish, 22-3.
Syracuse kept its fourth clean sheet of the season against Notre Dame. That is the most shutouts to start a season since 2014. The Orange are tied with Duke for the ACC lead in goals allowed with one.
The 4-0-1 record is the best start to a season since 2016.
SCOUTING THE PURPLE EAGLES:
Niagara is 1-3-1 entering Tuesday night's contest. Bill Boyle is in his seventh season as head coach of the Purple Eagles' men's soccer program. He has a record of 38-68-6 at Niagara.
In its last match, Niagara shared the points with Binghamton in a 2-2 draw. The Bearcats opened the scoring in the 52nd minute with a goal from Joe Spires, then doubled the advantage four minutes later with a goal from Carlo Cavalar. In the last 15 minutes, Niagara found an attacking rhythm. Nuukele Gboe scored his first goal of the season in the 78th minute to pull one back, then Rodrigo Almeida secured the draw in the 84th minute.
The Purple Eagles have a -3 goal difference this season. Almeida leads the team in goals with three, while Stephen Hasse holds the squad assist lead with three.
SERIES HISTORY:
Tuesday's match will be the 22nd meeting between Syracuse and Niagara. The Orange lead the all-time series, 17-4-0.
The last time the two sides met was in 2021. Syracuse dominated possession in a 2-0 win, as the Orange outshot the Purple Eagles, 23-4. After a scoreless first half, Deandre Kerr found the back of the net in the 59th minute. Curt Calov scored his first career goal to put the match away with 33 seconds left.
UP NEXT:
The Orange will be away from the SU Soccer Stadium for the next two matches. On Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., Syracuse will face off against the defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Clemson. That match will be broadcast live on ACC Network. Following that primetime match up, the team will take a trip to Colgate on Tuesday, Sept. 20. That contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.Â
