A home game and a neutral site showdown are on tap for the Syracuse field hockey team as the No. 13 Orange take on two top 20 opponents this weekend, including an ACC battle at J.S. Coyne Stadium on Friday afternoon.
From the Start
- For just the second time this season, Syracuse will play back-to-back games at home after last Sunday's 6-0 win over Dartmouth. The Orange continue ACC play on Friday against Boston College, ranked 18th last week. Sunday sees Syracuse head for Villanova, Pennsylvania for a neutral site showdown with No. 21 JMU
- The Orange are 4-0 at J.S. Coyne Stadium this season, having allowed just three goals at home
- The Orange clash with BC for the 36th time in program history, while meeting JMU for just the second time ever and first since 1995.
- After Sunday, four of the next six Syracuse field hockey games will be at home, with matches against Stanford, Cornell, Louisville and Rutgers. Two road games at UNC and Wake Forest remain after this week.
In the National Rankings
- Syracuse was ranked 13th in this week's Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll, picking up 540 points in the polls.
- North Carolina took over the top spot with 1,019 points and 35 of the 37 first-place selections. Northwestern was second with 930 points and five first-place votes. Iowa slotted third with 915 points, followed by Maryland in fourth with 908 points and the remaining first-place selection. Louisville rounded out the top five spots this week with 824 points.
- Nine opponents ranked in the top 25 this week, including four in the top 10: No. 1 North Carolina (Oct. 14), No. 5 Louisville (Oct. 21), No. 7 Virginia (L, 0-3), No. 9 Princeton (L, 1-5), No. 16 Boston College (Sept. 30), No. 17 Wake Forest (Oct. 28), No. 18 James Madison (Oct. 2), No. 21 Rutgers (Oct. 23), and No. 22 Duke (W, 5-1).
- All seven ACC member institutions were ranked inside the top 25, including three in the top 10 (UNC, Louisville, Virginia).
- As of this week, only two remaining opponents were not inside the top 25 for the Sept. 26 poll, according to the Division I head coaches.

- Syracuse and Boston College share six common opponents this year, with just one nonconference foe.
- The Orange are 2-1 against common opponents, while BC is 3-0 against the same three: Monmouth, Duke, Virginia.

Williamson's #9 Jersey to Be Retired
- Former Syracuse field hockey standout Julie Williamson's #9 jersey will be retired on Oct. 9 prior to the 2 p.m. match at J.S. Coyne Stadium against Cornell.
- Williamson is the first field hockey student-athlete to have a jersey retired.
- During her career (1991-94), Williamson helped lead Syracuse to its first-ever NCAA Tournament (1993) after capturing the BIG EAST title.Â
- Her Orange teams gathered a 52-20-7 mark in that span.
- She was the first three-time NFCHA All-American, a four-time All-Region pick. She graduated as the all-time points leader and still ranks seventh.
- Williamson was the first-ever Orange player selected to play for the USWNT, scoring against France for her first international goal on July 21, 1993.
