SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse men's soccer will wrap up its two-game road trip with a match against former BIG EAST rival UConn. The match will kick-off Monday at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on Flo Sports.
ORANGE UPDATE:
The Orange continued their unbeaten start to the season after fighting to a 1-1 draw against defending America East champion Vermont.
Newcomer Levonte Johnson opened the scoring in the 10th minute of play with the first goal of his Syracuse career. Fellow new addition Nathan Opoku assisted on the goal. Opoku has recorded at least one point in the first three games of his Syracuse career.
Vermont evened the score just 10 minutes after Johnson's goal. Former NC State forward Yanzi Benzini put a shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
The second half saw Syracuse increase the tempo on the attacking end of the pitch. The Orange outshot the Catamounts, 5-3, in the second period of action. Syracuse's best chance to secure a win came in the 57th minute, as Johnson shot just wide of the left post.
Despite allowing a goal, the Syracuse back line of Christian Curti, Olu Ogunwale, and Buster Sjoberg put in another solid showing. Syracuse limited Vermont's time on the ball in the second half, and only allowed a single shot on goal. Â
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES:
UConn is 2-1-0 under the direction of new head coach Christopher Gbandi. Prior to taking the mantle of head coach, Gbandi coached Northeastern for six seasons and won the 2000 Hermann Trophy as a player at UConn.
The Huskies won 3-1 their last time out against New Jersey Institute of Technology. Senior forward Moussa Wade opened the scoring early in the first half, while Soren Ilsoe and Mateo Leveque scored in the second half to secure the win.
Wade leads UConn in goals with two, while Leveque leads the squad in points with five (1 goal, 3 assists).
SERIES HISTORY:
Monday night's meeting between Syracuse and UConn marks the 39th meeting between the schools. UConn leads the all-time series, 22-13-3. Syracuse has won the last three matches between the two schools.
The Huskies and the Orange last met in 2019 at the SU Soccer. Syracuse won 1-0, as Sondre Norheim scored the lone goal off a corner kick. Syracuse's backline held UConn to just three shots.

Syracuse will travel back to the SU Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 10 to open Atlantic Coast Conference play against defending conference champion Notre Dame. The match is slated to kick off at 1 p.m. Syracuse will turn right around and host Niagara on Tuesday, Sept. 13. at 7 p.m.
