SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 1982 Syracuse men's soccer team will be honored on Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. during the Orange's match against Notre Dame. The 40th anniversary celebration of the 1982 Big East champions will take place during a halftime ceremony.
The men's soccer program broke new ground in 1982. The Orange finished with a record of 17-3-2 and won the inaugural BIG EAST Tournament under the direction of third-year head coach Alden Shattuck. The 17 wins are still the most in a season in program history, as the BIG EAST Tournament triumph was also the first conference championship in program history.
After losing the first match of the season 1-0 to Farleigh Dickinson, Syracuse went unbeaten for the next 14 games. The 1982 team was undefeated on the road, the only squad to do so since the men's soccer program was reinstated in 1970.
The run in the BIG EAST Tournament was dramatic and enthralling. In the semifinals, the Orange found a way past St. John's, 3-2, in a high scoring contest. Steve Claus scored two goals past the Red Storm, while John Karanfilovski scored a third.
The BIG EAST Championship was a wire-to-wire thriller against Boston College. After 90 minutes and five periods of overtime locked at zero, Syracuse found the championship-winning goal in the sixth overtime with a golden goal from Jim Powers. The game winner was the only goal of the season for Powers, while goalie Joe Papaleo assisted the goal.
Marcello Vitale led the Orange in both goals and assists with 14 and 11, respectively. An experienced defensive unit led by future Orange head coach Dean Foti only allowed 10 goals over the course of the season. Papaleo boasted a save percentage of .940 during the 1982 season, which still stands as the fourth-best mark in NCAA history.
Syracuse University Athletics is honored to recognize a pioneering group who set the standard for the men's soccer program. Admission to Saturday's match is free of charge.
