SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse was defeated by North Carolina (8-8, 2-5 ACC) with a sweep (25-18, 25-22, 25-23) on Friday night in the Women's Building.
"Coming into this match, we wanted to control the pace," said head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. "We also wanted to be more balanced on offense and get our middles involved. The match was a battle of unforced errors, and we made some that prevented us from winning at least one and possibly two sets."
'Cuse (2-15, 0-7 ACC) had a slow start in the first set, letting North Carolina go up 5-1. The Orange were able to cut the Tar Heel lead to two, 8-6, backed by two kills from freshman Zharia Harris-Waddy. After some back-and-forth, North Carolina accrued a scoring run of 9-1, brining its lead to 23-12. A late five-point run from the Orange showed resilience, but the Tar Heels went on to win the first frame, 25-18.
Syracuse got off to a good start in the second set, taking the first three points of the frame including an ace from graduate Alyssa Bert. North Carolina answered with a three-point run of its own to tie 'Cuse, 3-3. Two four-point runs in the middle of the set from the Tar Heels brought their lead to 13-9. The Orange battled back, putting together an 8-1 run and taking the frame lead, 18-15. After some North Carolina errors increased the 'Cuse lead to 22-18, a seven-point run from the Tar Heels allowed them to take the second set, 25-22.
The Orange started the scoring off in the third frame with a kill from junior Laila Smith. Effective attacking from both sides brought the score to 7-6 in favor of North Carolina. Each team was able to string together three-point runs throughout the set, with 'Cuse coming within one point of the North Caroling lead, 16-15. The Tar Heels held on to their lead for the rest of the match, taking set three and winning the match, 25-23.
