Orange Crews Race at Head of the Charles Regatta

The Syracuse men's rowing team had its first races of the fall season on Sunday afternoon at the 58th annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass. The Orange eight placed 11th in the Championship Eights event while the four was fifth in the Championship Fours race.
"Your hope for fall racing is that you get a sense of where you are against your opponents," Syracuse Head Coach Dave Reischman said. "We got exactly that. Both crews had good races. We found out we have some work to do and we will find out if we are up to the challenge."Â
The eight, stroked by junior Declan Fry and coxed by senior Michael Harris, finished the three-mile (4,800 meter) course on the Charles River in 14:50.0 and was the 10th-fastest college crew. The USRowing team, which set the course record in 2022, repeated as champions in the Men's Championship Eights while a hometown Harvard squad was second and the top collegiate crew. Princeton was third overall while Leander (England) was fourth and Yale was fifth.
"It was not the result that the team wanted, but it's early in the season," Fry said. "So the real test comes when we choose how to use the result. We can sulk or we can choose to light a fire, and I think I speak for the team when I say no one wants to sulk."Â
Syracuse was fifth in the Championship Fours, after placing third in 2022. Coxed by junior Joseph Biondolillo, the Orange crossed the finish in 16:57.0. Princeton won the Championship Fours event finishing in 16:33.4 while Penn (16:47.6), Georgetown (16:47.9), and Cornell (16:49.5) rounded out the top five finishers with the Orange.Â
"We had a solid race in the four but there are still improvements to be made," senior Reilly Eagan, bow seat of the four said. "We are ready to get back to work and keep moving forward."Â

Syracuse will return to the Central New York waterways to prepare for its next, and final race of the fall season on Nov. 4 at the Cornell Fall Invite. Joining the Orange and Big Red is Dartmouth at the Cayuga Lake Inlet in Ithaca, N.Y.
