MANAHAWKIN, N.J. – Two Syracuse University senior field hockey student-athletes were among the 38 NCAA Division I players named to the 2023 NFHCA Senior Team. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced the Team Wednesday morning.
Charlotte de Vries and Eefke van den Nieuwenhof, two of the three co-captain this season, were named to the team, which recognizes and celebrates outstanding performances. Syracuse was one of seven programs with at least two selected to the 2023 Senior Team.
One of the program's all-time leading point getters, de Vries was named All-ACC for a fifth-straight season, the first player in program history to earn All-Conference recognition five times. She tallied 49 points in her 'Cuse career, which ranks second all-time, while her 123 points (49g, 24a) ranked third in program history. This season, she notched nine goals with six assists for 24 points, transitioning to a more midfield-centric role. The Malvern, Pennsylvania native scored the game-winning goal against No. 7 Liberty to push the Orange to the NCAA Quarterfinals for a third-straight season, the only ACC team to win a first round game in each of the last three seasons.
Leading the Orange offense as a center back, van den Nieuwenhof was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year, in addition to All-ACC First Team honors. Backed by van den Nieuwenhof, the Orange finished 2023 with a goals against average of just 1.83 in nearly 1,100 minutes of action, while also limiting opponents to just 4.11 penalty corners per game. On the opposite end of the field, van den Nieuwenhof led Syracuse's fearsome offense, racking 14 goals and four assists for 32 points. She scored seven goals during penalty corner situations, while adding a national-best six penalty stroke goals. In the second game of the season, van den Nieuwenhof dropped an eight-point effort at Vermont, tallying a hat trick with two assists.
